U.S. Army 28th Infantry Division shoulder sleeve insignia (patch), World War II Issue

The red keystone is the official emblem of the State of Pennsylvania, and the 28th Division was originally a Pennsylvania National Guard unit.

The Germans called the 28th the "Bloody Bucket" because of the blood-red keystone insignia and the vicious fighting tactics it used during the Normandy Campaign.

The unit's other campaigns included Northern France, the Ardennes, and the Rhineland.

Its motto is "Fire and Movement."
