In March of 1942, General George Marshall, Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, ordered a sweeping reorganization of the Army so that only three commands would report to him directly. The three commands included the Army Ground Forces, the Army Air Forces, and a totally new ‘umbrella’ command originally called Services of Supply and subsequently renamed the Army Service Forces on March 12, 1943, which encompassed virtually the entire remaining Army components.
