There are many incredible true stories of Italian Army P.O.W.s who were brought to the United States on empty troop ships returning from Europe, where they were interned throughout the U.S. mainland in mostly secret Prisoner of War camps.
Yet, because Italy had already surrendered by 1944, Italian Army prisoners were considered to be 'low-escape risk'.
Consequently, unlike the tens of thousands of German and Japanese prisoners taken prisoner by the Americans and strictly guarded, the Italians by contrast were treated in a relaxed manner and were actually allowed to leave their P.O.W. camps for work in the local town or for leisure when under the guidance of an American soldier or resident!
This insignia was sewn on the cap of an Italian Army soldier to identify him as a P.O.W.
